Course Description​

Therapists working with patients in ICU face a complex challenge. These patients have limited mobility due to life support, monitoring equipment, multiple medical problems and muscle weakness. Early mobility can lead to an increase in the patient’s quality of life and higher functional capability. The content of this course will guide clinicians through the process of managing adult ICU patients. Case reports will be presented to demonstrate how the early mobility and walking program in ICU can positively impact the recovery of selected patients.

 

Course Objectives

  • Select patients for early mobility and rehab in ICU using clinical decision-making skills.

  • Identify ventilator settings on the ventilator screen and summarize common modes of mechanical ventilation.

  • Identify and state function of vascular catheters, tubes, and  equipment commonly used in the ICU.

  • Describe two types of muscle weakness associated with critical illness.

  • Discuss clinical implications of laboratory values and medications in ICU.

  • Recognize the importance of functional outcomes for patients in ICU.

  • Examine therapeutic interventions as treatment options for patients in ICU.

  • Identify the role of multidisciplinary team members in ICU.

  • Synthesize information for use in clinical and academic practice.

Day 1 - Fundamentals of ICU Care

  • 8:00-9:00: Early Mobility and Rehab in ICU: Clinical Concepts & Evidence Based Practice

  • 9:00-10:15: Mechanical Ventilation Explained Simply

  • 10:15- 10:30: BREAK

  • 10:30–11:30: Mechanical Ventilation Explained Simply (cont.)

  • 11:30-12:00: Non-invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation    

  • 12:00- 01:00: Vascular Catheters

  • 1:00–2:00:  LUNCH 

  • 2:00–3:00: Artificial Airways

  • 3:00-4:00: ICU Monitoring , Equipment and Medical Devices

  • 4:00–4:15: BREAK

  • 4:15- 5:00: Mechanical Assistive Devices

Day 2 - Essentials of ICU Rehab

  • 8:00–9:00: Weakness in the critically ill

  • 9:00-10:00: Medications commonly used in the ICU

  • 10:00 - 10:15: BREAK

  • 10:15- 10:45: Interpreting Laboratory Values

  • 10:45 -11:30: Assessment of patients in ICU

  • 11:30-12:00: Functional outcome tools in ICU

  • 12:00-1:00: Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) 

  • 1:00-2:00: LUNCH

  • 2:00- 3:00: Therapy Interventions:  Function oriented treatment from Positioning and Exercises 

  • 3:00- 3:15: BREAK

  • 3:15– 3:45: Therapeutic Interventions in ICU: Function oriented treatment for Transfers and Ambulation

  • 3:45 - 4:00: Final Thoughts / Discussion
